Mr Erkki Liikanen Member of the European Commission, responsible for Enterprise and the Information Society "Launching the next step for the Internet IPv6" Global IPv6 Service Launch Brussels, 16 January 2004

The purpose of this speech was to address to issues such as the arrival of the next new generation of Internet technology across global research and education networks. This entails the launching of the next step for the Internet IPv6. The latter is “a fundamental technology for the future of the deployment of Internet in general, which has been largely promoted in the context of the 5th Framework Programme and in the context of broader European policies like our eEurope Action Plan” says Erkki Liikanen.

The particular programme will eventually allow almost anything to be permanently connected to the Internet.

Another concept mentioned was eInfrastuctures which empowers the users to be “provided with the most advanced fully integrated communication and information processing services to researchers in Europe. They should also provide transparent, easy, cheap and secure access to all types of distributed resources (computers, databases, heavy research instruments, etc)”.

Therefore, this concept will be a “concrete implementation of a new model of shared use of computing and data resources across diverse technological, administrative and national domains”.
